The hollow way of Dötling > a geotope The impressive hollow way, with steep walls up to 5 m high, opens up a profile through the Oncophora layers, sediments of the brackish water molasse. The lower part lies in flour sands (at least 8 m thick). Shortly after the path turns south, the shell horizon (1 - 2 dm) can be seen, above which follows at least 10 m of mica sand. At the edge of the forest SE of the hollow way, the underlying leaf marl of the Upper Marine Molasse is cut into a slope crack (next to a tile storage area). (Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU)) The individual layers are clearly visible in this geotope. Also the shell horizon, which we could not see in the disappeared shell mines. The Salzach Gorge is impressive and you should definitely walk to the end of this hiking trail, even if you have to go back the same way. Steep, precipitous cliffs on both sides. At the end of the path, you can't go any further because the right-hand bank rises vertically 30 m out of the Salzach. This is an overwhelming sight. At the end of the path, a pier was built out of large rocks that stretches to the middle of the Salzach. This is intended to protect the right-hand bank from further erosion or at least reduce it. You can relax on the pier and take in the wonderful nature.
