The Well Tunnel at Dilsberg Castle is a historic, approximately 80-meter-long tunnel that once served as a water supply. Today, it can be visited seasonally—either independently or as part of a guided tour. A fascinating insight into medieval technology, directly beneath the castle.

Excerpt from wikipedia.org/wiki/Bergfest_Dilsberg: The castle tunnel was created using the separating joints in the rock, which is why the base and ridge are tapered. The tunnel was driven into the mountain from the outside and was supposed to hit the well shaft after 65 metres. However, the miners went astray several times. Therefore, the total length of the tunnel is 78 meters. Dilsberg local researchers previously assumed that the tunnel was built so that the castle crew could escape to the open during sieges. Today, however, it is assumed that the corridor was a ventilation tunnel. After the tunnel had served its purpose of protecting workers from poisonous gases, it was temporarily filled in. The legend of the underground passage that is said to lead to a Neckarsteinach castle under the Neckar was then formed. The writer Mark Twain mentioned this legend in his travel story A Tramp Abroad (in German: Stroll through Europe). The story inspired the German-American Fritz von Briesen to travel from New York around 1900 to find the tunnel. He let himself be abseiled and actually found the tunnel exit. With his financial help, the well and the tunnel were cleared of rubble in 1926 and the beginning of the tunnel was exposed in the forest.

Totally rustic dwelling place from the so-called Dachsenfranz. In the middle of the forest and also an adventure for the children

It is said to be a lookout tower of the former leather factory, which was located next to the Hammerweiher. During wartime, enemy planes were kept on the lookout here to warn the workers of the factory. They could then flee to the air raid shelter. I do not guarantee the accuracy of this statement 🤔

The Dachsenfranzhöhle was once the cave of the '"Dachsenfranz" Francesco Regali. He lived over a hundred years ago in the forests of the Odenwald and in the Kraichgau. It is not original, but it is a replica. It is impressive to see how the "Dachsenfranz" lived. Also great for children, because the small living room cave is accessible.

Does a fox family live here who are currently making coffee? Is it the exhaust ducts of the subway to Wilhelmsfeld? Or is it the exit of a secret tunnel system that runs under the Neckar and extends beyond the Dilsberg fortress? The speculation on the Internet is growing wild. There is a mysterious phenomenon in the Kleingemünde Forest: In winter, "warm" air flows out of a crevice not far from the Rothsnasenhütte. Sometimes it even steams. In summer, the outflowing air is perceived as cool. Hikers reported to the town hall because they had observed that warm air was flowing out of two crevices in the sandstone above Kleingemünd shortly before the Rothsnasenhütte. It was reported that even the glasses were fogging up. The hikers suspected there might be underground passages in the rock. The fountain and tunnels of the castle go deep down, two special features of the Dilsberg that were almost forgotten for a long time: the well tunnels and the castle fountain were filled in and legends arose from a secret passage. The rediscovered gallery can be visited. The depth cannot be seen from the outside. BURB FOUNTAIN: OVER 20 METERS DEPTH The 46-meter-deep castle fountain was built in two phases. Probably when the castle was built around 1150, a depth of about 21.50 meters was dug. At the height of the 18th meter there is a water collector and a door opening in the well shaft. The second phase of construction probably lasted from 1650 to 1680. The reason: the Kurpfälzer built Dilsberg into a garrison - and the soldiers had to be supplied with water. The water from the well was only intended for civilians.
