The gold mine 🪙💰 near Oberursel was an experimental mine with several shafts, which probably dates back to Roman times or possibly even to Celtic origins. The visible tunnel now serves as a bat quarters🦇🦇🦇. Please avoid unnecessarily illuminating the tunnel entrance. 🕯️

The gold mine was an experimental mine with three tunnels and several shafts, which probably dates from Roman times, possibly also of Celtic origin. In contrast to the hopeful name, gold has never been found here, not even minable ores. Today the shaft serves as a wintering place for bats.

Update April 2021: The area around the bat cave has unfortunately suffered a lot after massive deforestation. Now it looks pretty bleak here 😒

The former “Good Hope” mining tunnel on the nature discovery trail (Widschweinroute) is home to bats, toads, fire salamanders, newts, etc. All around there is a natural outdoor area. A little detour that is really worth it!
