The name of this lake is no coincidence; it's named for Mount Trashmore, which from this perspective you can see rising above the opposite shore. This 60-foot-tall "mountain" was created by compacting solid waste and clean soil. There's also a paved trail that goes all the way around the perimeter park, and a series of fitness stations you can use to get a great workout.

At 3,500 acres this preserve is one of the largest in Virginia. Being comprised mostly of wetlands it's an excellent place for fishing and kayaking. Please note that the preserve is periodically close for restorations and occasional staff shortages. Make sure you check current conditions before riding out here.

Chic's Beach, Chix Beach, and Chesapeake Beach are all the same, so don't be confused if you see all three mentioned in town. No matter what you call it the relatively calm waters are great for kayaking, swimming, and paddleboarding. The area is also less well known than nearby Virginia Beach so you can expect things to be a little quieter and less crowded.

There are wonderful ways to enjoy nature. The building for the main natural area was closed when we arrived, so we were only able to check out the park. The park was fine. No public toilets and hardly anyone there.

The Stumpy Lake Loop trail at the golf course is actually part of the Stumpy Lake Natural Area. The lake is right next to the parking area, but the trails just wind through the woods on dirt and wetland trails. This is a quiet trail to run on, and you can even add on miles on the paved roads around the property.
