Opened in 1981, Latta Nature Preserve sits on a peninsula in Mountain Island Lake. Being surrounded by water means it's a popular place for kayaking, fishing, and standup paddleboarding. The park has 16 miles of trails open to hikers and horseback riders, and is also home to the Carolina Raptor Center, an outstanding facility dedicated to rehabilitating injured birds and educating the public about their place in the ecosystem.

The area surrounding the lake features a mix of woodlands and wetland habitats, providing valuable ecosystem services and diverse scenery. Butterflies, dragonflies, and damselflies add a touch of color and movement to the landscape.

This is a lovely calming place to ride by, especially Freedom Lake which is a very popular spot for fishing. Within the park there are paved cycle paths as well as nature trails if you plan to come back ad visit without the bike.

Sherman Branch Nature Preserve has miles of singletrack and wide trails with rolling hills and lots of man-made biking obstacles. There are trails for every level of rider and plenty of different ponds and bridges to take breaks at.

Freedom Lake is located in the Freedom Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. It serves as the main attraction in the park and is used for fishing. The path, surrounding the lake, is popular among joggers.
