Wheeler Peak is nestled within Great Basin National Park, a vast and remote wilderness that spans 77,180 acres in eastern Nevada. The park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering stunning vistas of rugged mountain ranges, deep canyons, and expansive valleys. Notably, it is home to the bristlecone pine groves, where some of the oldest trees on the planet, dating back thousands of years, stand as silent witnesses to time. The Nipple is a subpeak of North Lovell Peak; it requires a short class 3 scramble to reach the summit from the saddle. You will know you've officially reached the top of The Nipple once you come across a large, 5 foot tall rock cairn. From the top, you have a great view of Becky Peak, which is the most northern mountain in the Schell range.

Standing at 11,883 feet, North Schell Peak is the tallest peak in the Schell Mountains. With over 5,000 feet of prominence, this mountain is known as one of the Ultra Peaks. Once on the ridge and summit, you will be surrounded by wildflowers while looking out at the many other peaks making up the Schell Mountains.

Square Top is an eclectic mountain peak in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. To actually summit the peak, you have to do a short, off-trail scramble. The actual trail ends at the base of the cliffs and still offers great views of the mountain and Cave Lake State Park.

Telegraph Peak's summit stands at over 9,900 feet. The work to ascend the combination of double-track road and trail will pay off in perfect views of the slightly taller Telegraph Hill to the north and glimpses of the Bristlecone Wilderness to the south.

At 13,063 feet, Wheeler Peak is the second-highest summit in the state of Nevada. The best time for summiting is from Mid-June through September, depending on snowlevel. To get there, start your hike either at the official trailhead about one-half mile from Wheeler Peak Campground or using the Bristlecone/Alpine Lakes Loop trailhead.
