The Roaring Fork River is a fast-flowing and crystal-clear tributary of the Colorado River, extending for 70 miles through stunning canyons and valleys. It begins at Independence Lake in the Sawatch Range and winds its way past the towns of Aspen, Basalt, and Carbondale before it merges with the Colorado River in Glenwood Springs. Known for its fast and exciting currents, the river attracts many thrill-seekers and is a prime spot for whitewater rafting.

This is intended to be a rest stop for drivers, but works just as well as a stop for runners! Here you can use the restrooms, enjoy views of Glenwood Canyon, and you have access to the Grizzly Creek Trail (the upper section of which is closed for reforestation as of 2023) across the street.

A natural wonder surrounded by canyon walls. Hanging Lake is a rare example of a travertine (limestone) geological formation that gives the water its aquamarine and turquoise colors.

A spectacular stretch of the Colorado River is through Glenwood Canyon. The Glenwood Canyon section runs 12.5 miles in length and is 1,300 ft deep at the deepest point. There is great whitewater as well as fishing on this scenic section.

Those who dare to hike up here can enjoy one of the most spectacular views in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area and Stillwater Reservoir down in the valley. Devils Causeway is rugged and narrow in places, with steep talus slopes dropping another 600 to 800 feet into the drainages below.

Since the lake became more popular over the years, there is now a permit system to reduce the masses visiting this sensitive environment.
