Incredible views over the geological mountain gorge that joins La Mancha and Andalusia within the Desfiladero de Despeñaperros Natural Park. Going down the Despeñaperros river is fun, but save energy for the climb.

This viewpoint is located about 600 meters outside the municipality of Santa Elena. It is worth looking out and getting a small sample of the beautiful Despeñaperros natural park. This gorge traced by the river of the same name is part of Sierra Morena and only has one population center: Santa Elena.

The Mirador del Desfiladero is located in the municipality of Aldeaquemada, in the Cascada de la Cimbarra Natural Area.

It is a construction that dates back to the 18th century, although it is not known for sure, destined both to grind grain and to take advantage of the force of the water to exert movement to some mallets, which in turn beat fabrics or skins to work them. The name itself is already a contradiction, since "batán" is the mechanism that activates the hammers to tan the skins by the action of the force of the water, while the "mill" takes advantage of the force of the water to grind cereals. Therefore the difference is in the function they perform rather than in the procedure to carry it out. It is located in a narrow canyon whose walls experience an appreciable difference in level, and used the waters of the stream of the same name. The most significant thing about the place is the access. IT IS NOT CYCLABLE 😱! and you have to push the bike almost all the way.

From here you can see the valley formed by the Yeguas river, which separates the provinces of Córdoba and Jaén and, in turn, the limits of the Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro Natural Park, on the Cordoba side, and the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park on the jiennense.

The balcony of the Los Órganos viewpoint is a steep and panoramic cliff over the Despeñaperros pass canyon. The mountains that appear in the landscape are about 300 million years old, when the level of an ancient sea was lowering and the blades emerged in the form of organ pipes that appear on the slopes of the ravine covered with colored mosses and lichens. The mountain that is in front is the Cerro del Castillo, where the Cueva de los Muñecos is located and other prehistoric shelters where they have been found from the Iberian culture.
