The Aalkeet Buitenpolder connects to the Vlietlanden nature reserve. The grassland is managed in such a way that the area remains suitable for meadow birds. The polder has a raised water level, so that the bottom remains soft enough for black-tailed godwits and redshanks to get their food out of the ground with their beaks. In the Rijsplas you can see geese species, widgeon and teal from November to April. The coppice on the Rijskade on the northeast side forms a shelter and habitat for weasel and numerous insects. In the summer the bird hide is difficult to reach from the north side via the bird hide path because it is overgrown with nettles and giant hogweed
