The Binnenveld, the low-lying area between Veluwe and Utrechtse Heuvelrug, originated in the last ice age. Until the late Middle Ages it was a particularly wet and inaccessible area in which the rivers De Grebbe and Kromme Eem flowed. Between 1473 and 1481, the Grift was dug under the leadership of the Stichtse (=Utrecht) Bishop David of Burgundy to cultivate the area and for peat extraction. The area on both sides of the Grift gradually became more accessible and was used as hayfields for the farmers who had their farms on slightly higher ground. The wet hay meadows contain many special plants and animals, including various orchids, the marsh fritillary, the loach, various water and meadow birds, etc.
