Unfortunately, you can only climb halfway up the observation tower, as a locked door blocks the way. The castle ruins are very small, but they are pretty.

A high, newly built tower rises from the West Frisian landscape on the sharp bend of the dike. In the 13th century, the fort 't Huys in Nuwendore (Nieuwendoorn) stood on this exact spot. The province of North Holland has rebuilt part of the castle. Visitors can tour the site and climb the tower, where they can imagine themselves as lord of the castle with a beautiful view over the landscape.

When Beerwout I of Egmont was appointed deputy to the Count of Holland in 1129, he strengthened his farm. A battle then broke out between the ruler of the abbey of Egmond and the lord of Egmond. Allard van Egmond was born here in 1130. During the Loons War, this house was destroyed in 1203, and Wouter van Egmont built a ring castle on the site with a heavy tower and shield wall on the south side. Around 1285, William II of Egmont must have expanded the house with an outer bailey and rampart towers. In 1573, troops of Diederik Sonoy set fire to the castle and chapel on behalf of William of Orange, because the castle was not allowed to fall into Spanish hands. In the 18th century, the Lords of Egmond bought the property back, and Jan van Egmond van Nijenburg had two towers restored. In 1798 the property was sold to scrappers. In the 1930s the remains were found in the swamp and can still be viewed. Source: Wikipedia

9월 27, 2022, Grote Kerk Schagen

Schagen Castle is located in the middle of the town and, based on its old structure, forms a typical square moated castle. The former weir system has only been partially preserved. The old ditch, which almost completely surrounds the complex and still contains water, can still be clearly seen. Access is via a wooden bridge, which is designed to resemble a drawbridge with the help of a few decorative elements. Behind it is the former castle courtyard, which offers a clear view in all directions, of the moat and the hotel. Next to the former entrance and today's bridge there are two round defensive towers, the foundations of which are still of original origin. Inside the towers you will find exhibition rooms on the First and Second World Wars. A hotel was built in the rear part of the square complex. In an attempt to recreate the former part of the castle with two three-story, tower-like extensions, both with tin roofs, the architect created a building that only blends in with the color of the stones. Unfortunately, most of the complex is closed to ordinary visitors. The castle was probably built in 1394 by Willem, who was a bastard of Ablrecht van Beieren. Lord Willem expanded and enlarged the castle in 1440. The fortification remained in the family's possession until 1568. In 1758 the complex was bought by George van Cats. Up to 1798 there were several changes of ownership through sales and in 1799 there was serious damage by soldiers. In 1820 the complex was auctioned off and demolished. The area surrounding the castle has been used as a prison and cemetery over the centuries. The towers were first renovated in 1931. The hotel was built in 2001/2002. https://burgenarchiv.de/burg_schagen_in_noord-holland

Around the market square there are some beautiful old houses with stepped gables from the 17th and 18th centuries. In the middle of the square stands the Grote Kerk with its tower, which can be seen from afar. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schagen

The castle, built by Willem, an illegitimate son of Duke Albrecht, was no longer inhabited from 1706. In 1799, the castle was occupied by English and Russian troops, resulting in total destruction. After 1820 the castle was demolished, with the exception of the two round corner towers. Archaeological research showed that the walls were no thicker than 70 cm, making the castle hardly defensible at that time. A wooden predecessor of the castle may have been built around 1300. Today only the two towers remain as a ruin on the former castle grounds on the south side of the Market Square.

I've been there twice now (period June 25th - July 16th, 2022). Both times the access was closed due to vandalism damage. At least that's what a posted sign says. I couldn't see any damage from afar.

The ruins of this old castle can be visited. A lookout tower gives you an overview. Overall a recommended stop.

'T Huys in Nuwendore at Krabbendam If you drive from Krabbendam via the Westfriese Omringdijk to Eenigenburg, you will notice something special. At the sharp bend in the dike, a tall, newly built tower rises from the Lower West Frisian countryside. Exactly at this point was in the 13th century, the Fortress' t Huys in Nuwendore (Nieuwendoorn). The province of Noord-Holland had a part of the castle rebuilt. You can visit the site and climb the tower - here you can imagine yourself as lord of the castle overlooking the landscape.

The Grote Kerk on the market is a Reformed church, but looks remarkably opulent. The Neo-Renaissance design is by JAG van der Steur, who has brought back elements of the previous church into the building. For example, the tower of the new church has the same onion-shaped tower. However, it was decided to build the choir to the west, so that the tower would be more prominent in the extended city in the east. The building was completed in 1897. In 1923, the interior of the ship was shortened by a wooden partition over the last two bays. The church was restored in 1978. The church stands in the middle of the market, in the center of Schagen, with the tower on the east side.

The castle, of which only two towers were preserved, was reconstructed in 2001. The new castle houses a hotel, several small museums and several departments of the city administration.
