The Wurm Valley refuge near Herzogenrath is a small but meaningful sanctuary nestled in the tranquil landscape of the Wurm. Situated on a walking and cycling path along the meandering river, the refuge offers shelter from rain and wind, but above all, a place to pause and take in the surrounding valley. Surrounded by lush greenery, with the Wurm gently flowing through the valley, this place offers a moment of solitude and contemplation in everyday life or during a longer hike through nature.

The birdwatching hut on the Brunssummerheide is a sheltered observation area in the heart of the nature reserve, specially designed to observe birds and other animals in their natural habitat without disturbing them. From the hut, you have views of heathlands, fens, and forest edges, making it an excellent spot for birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers. Due to the recent fire in parts of the heathland, the hut now also offers views of recovering and partially charred areas, creating a unique, sometimes dramatic, sight. The combination of tranquility, nature, and the opportunity to observe hidden life makes the birdwatching hut an atmospheric and educational destination in the Brunssummerheide.

More than 100 years ago, one of the great-grandfathers of the current owners took over his parents' forge in Epen. His wife – therefore the great-grandmother of the current owners – also starts a shop here. There she sells all kinds of things: from nails, wallpaper and colonial goods to wheelbarrows and fabrics. For a small fee, travelers can sleep in the hayloft. In the evening they eat with the pot with the blacksmith, his wife and the large crowd of children. The Smidse has remained the property of the Bessems family for generations, until today. The inn is often referred to as 'Pension Bessems' on old picture postcards. The 5th generation of Bessems has been at the helm since 2007. They continue the work of previous generations with great enthusiasm.
