São Pedro das Cabeças is the legendary site of the Battle of Ourique, where D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, defeated five Moorish kings. The victory was so remarkable that it is still immortalized in the center of the Portuguese flag.

This measuring point marks the highest point of the Rocha da Pena at 479 metres above sea level. The view is simply fantastic in clear weather and extends southwards to the Atlantic coast.

A difficult climb, in Serra do Caldeirão, which leads to a high point with a fantastic view over the Algarve mountains.

On the dirt roads close to the starting/finishing point, you can see Cerro do Malhão. It is one of the highest points in the Serra do Caldeirão mountain range. The views of the other hills and mountains in the region are very beautiful from this point.

The cycle from Almodovar to Messiness is a great ride with very enjoyable climbes & amazing down hills on great road surfaces. Don’t be deterred by Komoot’s lack of indication of food stops along the route as there are ample to stop at !! We strongly recommend this route ! Cheers Graeme & Jane.
