A site well worth seeing. It looks more impressive from a distance than up close.

"Aquí nasceu Portugal" - "Here Portugal was born" - is emblazoned in large letters on the old city wall. Afonso Henriques is said to have come from this small town. He courageously broke away from Spain in 1139, proclaiming himself the first king of Portugal and making Guimarães its first capital.

The Church of São Miguel do Castelo, also known as the Chapel of S'o Miguel Castle, was built in 1239 by the Foundation of Our Lady of the Olive Tree. Legend has it that the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, was baptized here. Over the centuries, it gradually fell into ruin, reaching a state of disrepair in the mid-19th century when the Martins Sarmento Society decided to restore it. https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igreja_de_S%C3%A3o_Miguel_do_Castelo

The Palace of the Dukes of Braganza was commissioned by Dom Afonso around 1420—the year of his second marriage to Constança de Noronha. Dom Afonso was the illegitimate son of King João I and acquired the titles of 8th Count of Barcelos, 2nd Count of Neiva, and 1st Duke of Braganza! It is considered a unique architectural example on the Iberian Peninsula!

The residence was built in the first quarter of the 15th century (probably between 1420 and 1422) by Afonso, Count of Barcelos, the illegitimate son of John and the future Duke of Braganza, upon his return to Portugal after a series of diplomatic missions to the courts of France, Venice, Aragon, and Castile. The construction of this building marked the completion of his second marriage, when he took up residence in the city. The project, as some authors have suggested, was entrusted to the French architect Antom. However, around 1442 it was still under construction when the regent Peter came to Guimarães and stayed in the palace, which in time granted his half-brother the title of 1st Duke of Braganza. The commission continued until 1461, when Afonso died: the property and titles passed to his brother Fernando, although the widow, Constança de Noronha, continued to live in the residence and receive the land rents from the holdings in Guimarães.

The castle is inextricably linked to the military history of the young kingdom. In 1127, Afonso Henrique fought numerous battles against his cousin Afonso VII, King of Aragon, whom he no longer wanted to recognize as his vassal. The castle also contains the sacrifice of the valet, Egas Moniz. He had pledged his word to the Duke, who, after realizing that he would not be able to withstand Afonso VII's siege, had promised to be his vassal. However, when Henrique realized that the battle would still end in his favor, he broke his promise. Up until the end of the 14th century, the castle of Guimarães was the scene of heroic battles in defense of the young kingdom. All too often, its independence had been shaken to the core by dynastic disputes with Castile. In the age of modern artillery, the importance of the castle, like that of so many others, declined. Left to decay by time and human ignorance, many centuries passed before it was restored to its original size and beauty at the beginning of the 20th century.

The imposing Gothic Revival structure overlooking the Vizela river and the Thermal Park on its opposite bank was commissioned in 1905 by a local politician, businessman and physician, dr Armindo Ribeiro de Faria to serve as the new town hall. But those plans fell through and instead it housed a private club, then a school and later even a wine warehouse. Abandoned and crumbling, in 2008 the Castle was bought by the local council or Câmara Municipal. Unfortunately its fortunes didn't exactly reverse because of the lack of funds. Worse still, in 2020 it was badly damaged by a fire. However there seems to be some hope on the horizon with a new plan of restoration adopted by the Câmara in March 2021.
