A wonderful little walk, very varied and enhanced by the equally varied sounds of birdsong! We highly recommend it if you are in the area.

In the plain plumage, the white plumage on the crown and neck, as well as the white thigh patch, are missing. The white area at the base of the beak is broader, a dirty white, and less sharply contrasted with the otherwise black neck and head plumage. The crest is only hinted at.

The structure of the cormorant's plumage absorbs water, which reduces buoyancy, allowing the bird to float very low in the water. When a cormorant leaves the water, it first shakes out its feathers. Then it spreads its wings to help its wet feathers dry more quickly.[ In adult birds, the iris is emerald green; in younger birds, it is gray-brown or gray-green. The upper mandible is lead-gray with a blackish ridge; the lower mandible is horn-yellow, with a gray tip. The legs and feet are black in all age groups.

The subspecies P. c. sinensis, widespread in Central Europe, is predominantly black; in sunlight, the feathers shine a metallic green or bluish hue. The upper wing coverts shimmer bronze and are edged with glossy black, giving the upper wing a scaled appearance. The crown and nape are interspersed with fine white feathers. A crest forms the back of the head, formed by approximately 4 cm long, protruding feathers. At the base of the beak, there is a bare, yellow patch of skin with broad white edges, and the outer thigh base has a white patch. There is no difference in coloration between the sexes.

Cormorants are almost the size of a goose, with a body length of 77 to 94 cm and a wingspan of 121 to 149 cm. Males are slightly larger and heavier than females. The weight of males varies between 1975 and 3180 g, while females reach 1673–2555 g. Male breeding birds on Rügen had wingspans of 334 to 382 mm, with an average of 358.5 mm, while females there reached 321 to 357 mm, with an average of 335.0 mm.[6] The relatively large beak is, as in all species of the genus, hooked at the end.

The great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) is a bird species in the cormorant family Phalacrocoracidae. The species' range includes large parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as Australia and New Zealand, as well as Greenland and the east coast of North America. Like all members of the genus Phalacrocorax, their diet consists almost exclusively of fish. Cormorants are sociable throughout the year, and their breeding colonies are located along coasts or large bodies of water. The population and distribution of the species in Europe have been strongly influenced by human hunting; at one point, the species was almost extinct in inland Central Europe. A significant population recovery has been observed in recent decades. The great cormorant was Bird of the Year in Germany and Austria in 2010.

The crane is the largest of Sweden's birds. It was once a wild bird, found mainly in Norrland. However, the species has now also conquered southern Sweden. In many places, it can even be found near humans.
