In the artists' village of Wissant, a school of naturalistic plein air and genre painting emerged in the 1880s and 1890s, becoming known for its depictions of the village, the landscape, and the everyday lives of fishermen. The painters of this École de Wissant included Virginie Demont-Breton (1859–1935), her husband Adrien Demont (1851–1928), Pierre Carrier-Belleuse (1851–1932), and Fernand Stiévenart (1862–1922). Francis Tattegrain (1852–1915) also spent his summers here.
