Surrounded by marshes, reeds and a variety of birdlife, this lagoon is located near the Mediterranean coast and is a haven for migratory and resident bird species. You will enjoy a leisurely stroll while enjoying panoramic views of the water and surrounding vegetation. You will also come across salt marshes and, if you are lucky, you will spot pink flamingos wading in the shallow waters.

Tunnel de Malpas, very narrow path through the tunnel, I had to carry my bike. Fortunately noone was coming the other way. This is a multi-level construction. The road passes over the canal tunnel, which passes over the rail tunnel, which passes over the drainage tunnel from the Etang de Montady. A train passed under my feet when I was in the canal tunnel, weird!

Above the Tunnel Malpas of the Canal du Midi, there is a viewpoint over the Étang de Montady in a small parking lot. This is a Mediterranean lagoon that was drained in the Middle Ages by a radial drainage system. It lies between the municipalities of Montady and Colombiers, around 10 km west of Béziers. Because of its appearance, it is also called "Gateau du Roi" (King's Cake). (Wikipedia) This shape is very easy to see from the viewpoint and the short detour from the Canal du Midi is well worth it.

Beautiful karst lake, which can be hiked from above as well as from below; About 30 years ago there were still rock divers there. In the meantime, however, bathing and jumping in the water is prohibited for safety reasons.

Although it looks very tempting, it is strongly advised not to bathe here. It should probably have drowned some people, although I am never sure in such reports, whether they are true or if they must serve as further deterrent.
