Take a break here to admire the idyllic landscapes at the water's edge. The Chabaud-Latour pond is a very rich natural site. Many species of birds stop there during their migration or reside there all year round.

As you walk through the Raismes-Saint-Amand-Wallers Forest, you will come across many small, unnamed ponds that reflect the trees and the sky in winter and are covered in algae in summer.

Lake Bernissart is an artificial pond with an area of 10 hectares, surrounded by wooded areas and wasteland. Created as part of local mining activities, the site is today recognized for its ecological richness, sheltering a diverse fauna and flora, notably rare ornithological and odonatological species.

The Chabaud Latour pond is an artificial body of water. It offers splendid views during the passage of the seasons.

The lake is superb and I recommend it. On the other hand, the circuit leaving from Quièvrain is very disappointing. Only big roads with a lot of traffic and a lot of trucks, nothing interesting except dangerous. There are certainly much more pleasant alternatives for cycling. Therese

Like most of the wetlands in the Haine valley, the Harchies-Hensies-Pommeroeul marshes were formed in subsidence caused by mining. The depressions were formed in the mid-1920s and immediately filled with water. This is how the ponds we can still see today were formed. The fact that mining was once practiced is still visible in the many mine heaps. These very dry and warm environments are home to a special flora and fauna. However, the greatest interest of the 'Marais d'Harchies-Hensies-Pommeroeul' lies in the wetlands. The ponds and their bankside vegetation cover a large area.Museum description: A magnificent natural area The marshes are the largest reed-covered area in Wallonia (more than 50 hectares). The number of animal species is not that great, but they are rare and some are even threatened with extinction. More than 300 species have already been observed there and about 100 of them have bred there at least once. Some species have not been observed in recent years, but others have recently settled there. Source: https://www.visitwapi.be/nl/moeras-van-harchies

Nice walk around the lake. Well appointed, children's park. 7kms to go around it.
