This small canyon spans the Besso river near Nordmannslågen. It enhances the landscape created by the lake and the vast expanses surrounding it.

Gamlevegen Normannslepene is the name of a network of old east-west routes across the Hardangervidda. One of them, Store Normannslepa, runs through the Hjølmadal valley. * Travel along these routes was largely used to drive cattle for trade. The farmers of Eidfjord bought cattle, horses, sheep, and goats, drove them up the Hardangervidda, and then on to the markets in Eastern Norway, where they were sold. Up to 500 animals could be driven across the moors at a time. The last of them left Eidfjord in 1918.

Very beautiful, but not easy to walk path along the roaring river

Hello everyone, We were there yesterday - June 8th, 2024 - and walked the route. My conclusion: Gravel bike ✅ Trekking bike ✅ Hiking ✅ Road bike 😕, not recommended.

Fences are up again, but leave room for the bike. Ride at your own risk, the impacts of stones on the road are clearly visible. Cycle path ends at a construction site far before the Voringsfossen viewpoint. Until then you have to walk along the street. It's probably also banned because it's dangerous. Bike path is scenic, if you ignore the dangers.

The road is officially closed, but there is no longer a pile of rubble in the way. So the path is clear and can be driven on. But you should drive carefully. At the beginning of the old road we had to lift the bikes over the crash barrier, otherwise there is no access because there is a construction site there.

You can pass both fences at the moment.

On the way to the Hardangervidda nature reserve, this is one of the most beautiful spots with a view of the Eidfjord valley. Provided the weather is good ;-)
