Two corrections: Contrary to what the original name of this highlight stated, you are not in the Begelen domain (which is located in Gullegem, about 25 km from here), but in the Palingbeek domain. And, contrary to what another user here stated, this was not previously a mining area (in the sense of a mining area), but an area scarred by mines and bombs during the First World War.

The domain, once a mining site, is now an oasis of greenery with well-maintained footpaths that wind through forests, meadows and past tranquil ponds. The area is known for its rich biodiversity. During your walk you will be treated to the sound of birds and the view of the water, especially in spring and summer.

The nature reserve is just over 40 hectares and is home to many birds, which can be viewed from the bird hide. The area is managed by nature and forest. In the 13th and 14th centuries, St. Michael's parish was located here. It was designed in the early 1990s as a reservoir for drinking water and as a holding basin against flooding. The finds from the excavations of St. Michael's parish used to be on display in glass cabinets in the Mergelynck Museum, but are now also in the Yper Museum.

Zillebeke Pond was created in the 13th century, when a number of ponds were constructed around the city of Ypres for drinking water, the cloth industry and to feed the city canals. In 1217, five ponds were mentioned, to which adjustments were later made. By damming the Zillebeek valley, the Zillebeke pond was formed, which approximately took its current shape around 1295. The Pool of Peace (or Lone Tree Crater) in Wijtschate is now a peaceful reminder of the great Mine Battle of June 1917. The opening of the offensive was marked by the explosion of 19 deep mines under the German lines between Ploegsteert and Hill 60. explosions form huge craters in the landscape. The largest and most ultimate crater is the Pool of Peace. It is 12 meters deep and has a diameter of 129 meters.

In the early 14th century, Ypres was a very prosperous and densely populated city. Two ponds were constructed for the water supply: in Dikkebus and in Zillebeke, and these ponds still supply Ypres with drinking water. The 28 hectare Zillebeke pond is fed by the Zillebeek. On the western bank is the pumping and purification station, which produces about four to five thousand cubic meters of drinking water every day. The pond is enclosed by a beautiful double row of trees. Fishing is possible, subject to a special fishing permit. The pond is a valuable part of nature. The large fields of water lilies are very picturesque. A colony of grebes breeds there, but also gray heron, coot, moorhen, mallard and sandpiper are at home here. During the migratory season, the pond is frequently visited by numerous bird species. You can cycle and walk around the pond. Source: Knooper.com/zillebekevijver

Old pond that supplies fresh water to the city of Ypres. Some explanation: The Dikkebusvijver is a pond near the village of Dikkebus, south of the city of Ypres. On July 23, 1310, the City of Ypres received permission from the Count of Flanders to dig the pond next to the Zillebeke pond to ensure that sufficient water was available in the city for fulling and dyeing sheets. The pond was created by damming the Kemmelbeek and was excavated on the grounds of the parishes of Vlamertinge, Dikkebus and Voormezele. The expropriation of the necessary land was arranged by the city of Ypres and took about ten years to complete. The pond of thirty-six hectares was not realized until around 1323. The pond provided and supplies Ypres with drinking water, formerly through the Ypres canals and then through a system of oak pipes. Since 1926 this has been done via a modern pumping station. The Zillebeke pond and Bellewaarde pond were also created in this way. In addition to the drinking water supply, the pond also has a recreational function. Enjoy the shaded banks at moderate speed.

The Westhoek Vredeshoek platform has been proposed in the Peace Forest in Ypres. It is a platform in which the 17 Westhoek municipalities will collaborate with organizations such as Wakker voor Vrede, Moeders voor Vrede and Peace Village. They also want to further promote the idea of peace after the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the First World War. Dikkebusvijver is a beautiful pond located between Ypres and Heuvelland, in the southwest of West Flanders. The Kemmelberg, the Rodeberg and the Scherpenberg are nearby. And just across the river from France with the Zwarteberg and the Catsberg. Typical of the region are the wide panoramas, the many war memories (military cemeteries, bunkers and bomb craters) and the rural villages where everyone still knows everyone. The 36 hectare pond is a water sports paradise, the wells around it a true adventure and cross festival. Dikkebusvijver is only 4 km from the center of Ypres and 5 km from the Kemmelberg. It is the starting point of many walking and cycling routes. This is where our outdoor center is located with changing rooms and showers and many covered areas, so that we can also be active indoors in bad weather and in winter. The peace pond, Pool of Peace or also called Spanbroekmolen crater, is the result of the British mine battle. On 7 June 1917, British troops detonated 19 underground mines between Hill 60 and Ploegsteert with the aim of straightening the front around Ypres and facilitating the battle for Passchendaele. The explosions created huge craters in the landscape. The largest and most impressive crater is the Pool of Peace with a depth of 12 m and a diameter of 129 m. Around the crater are a number of cemeteries, including the Lone Tree Cemetery across the street. Source: Hiking guide Flanders Route GR 128
