I was able to visit the cave thanks to the initiative of the Eastern Emilia Parks Authority and the support of the speleological guides of Bologna. I found it a very special and interesting experience .. and also fun between crawling in some places and some muddy slides to do downhill and uphill I therefore feel I can recommend it to both adults and children, especially them 😊 The guides were then really good and told the story of the cave and its various evolutions without ever getting bored.

The landscape is extremely suggestive and the descent is relatively easy, even if in the rain it can create dangerous furrows

The Farneto area ... is today best known for the cave that bears the same name: it was discovered in 1871 by Francesco Orsoni, who began the first, important archaeological research. In the 1960s Luigi Fantini, in a natural shelter created by a protruding layer, found some burials attributable to the Copper Age (the finds are exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Bologna). Shaken by quarry work, the entire outcrop and the cave remained inaccessible for years due to a landslide that blocked the entrance, until the implementation of a recovery and safety intervention that finally allowed its redevelopment and reopening to the public in 2008. It is the largest sinkhole of the whole Bolognese gypsum complex (the diameter exceeds 700 m) and includes smaller sinkholes and numerous sinkholes, which lead to as many caves. Interesting route for training with long stretches of gentle uphill gradient and some short stretches to force the leg uphill! Cold winter and hot summer but with many shaded areas! There is little traffic even if the road is not very wide. You can reach Quinzano and Loiano if you want to tackle long uphill stretches.

The entrance to the Grotta della Spipola, located at an altitude of 135 m on the bottom of the sinkhole of the same name, is largely artificial: it was built by the Bolognese Speleological Group in 1936, during the works carried out to safeguard the cavity from recurrent vandalisms. The natural entrance (Bus d'la Speppla or Buco del Calzolaio), through which Luigi Fantini and other speleologists of the GSB, descending two wells, entered the Spipola for the first time, is located a little higher (at an altitude of 165 m). This access was blocked as soon as the lower, more comfortable and secure one became available. The protection of the cave lasted until 1940. Since then, for more than fifty years, the Spipola suffered continuous disfigurements, partly due to its use as a refuge during the last war, but caused above all by occasional visitors. The current closure was carried out in 1995 by GSB-USB on behalf of the Park, which took care of the reclamation and some modest adaptation of the entire tourist route according to the indications of the Italian Speleological Society regarding the reduction of the environmental impact. The Grotta del Farneto is one of the most well-known and important prehistoric settlements in the Bolognese area. It can only be visited with a guided tour ( http://www.parks.it/parco.gessi.bolognesi/man.php ) In any case, it is worth a visit (even if it is closed ). The fresh air that comes out of it provides a bit of relief from the summer heat.

Epic and almost lunar landscapes. A few hundred meters from the "civilization". It can be reached from the educational farm “la Dulcamara” with a fast descent with several furrows and roots. At the end of the part immersed in the vegetation you reach the gully. Stop and enjoy the landscape. Going down the part of the gully you reach the lowest point of the path that crosses a stream. Keep left and walk along the lower part of the gully. A final climb will take you on the road to San Andrea

Today 27/03/21 the section near the intersection between Pilastrino and via delle vigne is quite dry. However, I recommend taking the small detour that you find on the left going down from via del Pilastrino to avoid the broken and muddy piece. For those arriving from via delle vigne and wanting to go up via del Pilastrino, find it on the right near the intersection of the two paths
