https://www.komoot.com/it-it/tour/970823126 Short yet beautiful, the Rilke Trail is a classic walk that satisfies everyone. It's in the city, it's easy, it's short, it has no difficult elevation changes, and it's very scenic. A must-do. For everyone.

11월 23, 2023, Rocca di Monfalcone
The fortress was built by the Patriarchs of Aquileia in the Middle Ages on the ruins of late ancient structures. In 1409 it passed to the Counts of Gorizia and in 1420 to Venice, where it remained until 1797. During the Venetian domination it was reinforced again and elected as a stronghold of the defensive line of the eastern border. Partly destroyed by the war, the fortress was restored by the Superintendency between 1950 and 1955. Since 30 March 1970 it has been home to the Speleo-Paleontological Museum, in which over ten thousand historical-scientific finds are on display.

The Rocca di Monfalcone is a fortified building of medieval origin that stands on the first hills that border the city. Still considered the symbol of Monfalcone today, it was built by the Patriarchs of Aquileia on the ruins of late ancient structures. In 1409 it passed to the Counts of Gorizia and in 1420 to Venice, where it remained until 1797, the year of the fall of the Republic by Napoleon. During the Venetian domination it was reinforced and elected a stronghold of the defensive line of the eastern border (especially at the time of the Turkish incursions). The stone lion of St. Mark inserted in the wall of the tower (on the lintel of the access door) is a tangible reminder of that era. The lion visible today replaces the original which has been lost: it was sculpted in 1957 in the Venetian workshop of Romeo dell'Era and donated to the City of Monfalcone by the Municipality of Venice. Partly destroyed by the war, the fortress was restored by the Superintendency of Monuments between 1950 and 1955. From 1968 it was entrusted to the care of the Monfalconese Speleological Group "Amici del Fante" which, two years later, inaugurated a paleontological museum, in later transferred to the city center and replaced by the current speleological museum. From the outside, the square-plan keep is clearly distinguishable, surrounded by a circular defensive wall structure made up of three distinct parts: two concentric facings in blocks of karst stone (approaching three and a half meters thick), vault delimited by the remains of a pre-Roman castle. Between the keep and the wall there was a covered gallery and the rooms intended for the garrison, while two cistern-wells were dug in the courtyard, one of which drew from a rainwater tank. The keep has a division into three levels which house cramped rooms in order to guarantee total defence, even in the case of small militias. The internal masonry is made of dry limestone. The concrete elements, corresponding to the external perimeter of the walls, were built during the First World War to reinforce the posts. The paths of the trenches run around. From above the view extends over the city and the sea, from the side the view is protected by the karst reliefs.

The current appearance is Renaissance. It found itself on the front lines of some important wars: the Gradisca war and the First World War, suffering heavy damage in both cases. In 1563 the Slovenian Protestant preacher Primož Trubar stayed in Rubbia, remembered by a bust placed in front of the entrance

At the end of the 16th century the fortress lost its defensive function (the fortress of Palmanova had been built) and became a lookout point on the eastern borders of the Republic. This did not prevent the sacking of the city and the fortress itself by the Usocchi in 1615. The Venetian stable garrison stayed there until 1797, the year of the fall of the Venetian Republic by Napoleon. Abandoned for a very long time, it suffered the offenses of the First World War; in the years between 1950 and 1955 it was restored by the Superintendency of Monuments and since 1968 it has been entrusted to the care of the Monfalconese Speleological Group "Amici del Fante" which, two years later, inaugurated a paleontological museum, later transferred to the center of the city and replaced by the current speleological museum.

Locations crossed: Jamiano - Lake Pietrarossa - Cima Sablici - Quota E. Toti - Cima di Pietrarossa - Rocca Monfalcone - Moschenizza River - Monte Cosici - Piana di Doberdò - Lake Doberdò - Monte Arupacupa - Jamiano Detailed description of the itinerary: http://www.isontinoinbici.it/CarsoMonfalcone/mtb-carso-monfalcone-doberdo-pietrarossa.html Photo Gallery: https://photos.app.goo.gl/gG9Qx2fNptUBuoYX8 The Karst of Monfalcone suffered deep wounds during the 20th century: the First World War, the Cold War, military servitudes, the border between Eastern Europe and the West (the Iron Curtain), the A4 motorway. Today, however, it represents an area of great historical value (the castles, the Rocca di Monfalcone, the trenches, the war caves, the "works" of the arresting infantry), naturalistic value (the karst moor, the woods and the karst scrub , the reforestation pine forests, the Mediterranean and Balkan flora) and geological (the epigean and underground karst phenomena, the system of karst lakes of Pietrarossa and Doberdò). Traveling along the karst hills behind Monfalcone it is possible to visit the Great War Theme Park. It was opened to the public in 2005 and covers an area of approximately 4 km2. It offers visitors three different areas to discover the places where various battles took place between June 1915 and May 1917. Also interesting is the presence of the hillforts whose history dates back to ancient times. There are five fortified villages dating back to the Bronze Age, witnesses of a settled pastoral society: Gradiscata, Forcate, Rocca, Golas and Moschenizza. Located at an altitude of 60 m above sea level, they are in visual communication with each other. The karst plateau that extends between the town of Doberdò, the lake of the same name and the peaks of the Cosici and Debeli mountains was used as a training area for tanks during the years of the Cold War. Even today, various defensive works (fortifications, observatories, etc.) are still present here and there. Lake Doberdò is one of the few examples of a karst lake in Europe. The flows of the Vipacco and Isonzo rivers influence the level of its waters fed through the underground system of the Gorizia Karst. Other rare examples of karst wetland systems are Lake Pietrarossa and the Sablici swamp. The ring proposed here, almost entirely off-road (there are only two km of asphalt), allows you to "interact" with all these elements.
