Walking uphill from the town center of Bellano, you'll reach the entrance to L'Orrido di Bellano, a spectacular gorge carved into the mountainside by the Pioverna River. A remarkable feature is that you can access the gorge and its impressive waterfalls via several footbridges. You'll hear and see the thundering water and the worn, smooth rocks and caves. In the evening, the Orrido is illuminated in a unique way. Originally a small waterfall that flowed over the edge of a cliff into Lake Como, this mountain river carved a deep groove in the foot of the mountainside between Taceno and Bellano over the course of 15 million years. The waterfall has since retreated into the narrow and impressive ravine. Water power was used in past centuries in the iron and leather industries, and until recently in silk mills. Today, it still generates electricity. Around the gorge, there are several attractions for children, including some impressive dinosaur replicas. Opening hours: Open daily • April to June: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM to 7:00 PM. • July to September: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Evening opening from 8:45 PM to 10:00 PM. Truly suggestive road, with long stretches in the shade. The road surface is quite ruined, be careful especially when going downhill. Numerous waterfalls dot the route and in some cases a lot of water falls from the slopes directly into the road.

Great little tour with an overwhelming natural spectacle. Absolutely worth it. And then an espresso and an ice cream in Bellano, a pretty little place by the lake.
