The Vione tower was part of the fortification system in the area between Mazzo and Grosio, built by the Venosta family in the Middle Ages. Like practically all the other castles in the valley, it was destroyed shortly after the Grisons from Switzerland conquered Valtellina in 1512. The tower had a lookout function and in fact offers a beautiful view.

This area always features remains of historical interest

It is assumed that the Castle of S. Pietro was mentioned in a peace treaty with Como in 1201. The certain date is that of its conquest in 1376 by order of Galeazzo Visconti, who extended his control over the entire Valtellina area. The structure of the Castle of S. Pietro was composed of two towers: a round one, completely collapsed and a rectangular one, the remains of which can still be admired. A little further down stood the Church of Saints Peter, Paul and Andrew, of which today we can admire the ruins that give it the name of Gesa Rota or Broken Church.

Visits to the wall with the rock carvings must be booked.

Beautiful Valtellina castle, just above the deck, cannot be visited inside, private

Pedenale castle is part of the Sentiero dei Castelli. You can get there via steep paths in the woods, which are pleasant but at times you may have to push your bike.

The Vione tower is part of the Sentiero dei Castelli, and is located in a sunny spot on the Rhaetian side above Vione. You get there via a steep path where you might have to push your bike or carry it on your shoulder, but there is a beautiful view and it's a nice spot to have a picnic.

The Visconti castle and the nearby Rupe Magna are an attraction worth visiting if you pass through Grosio. You can get there easily from a path that passes through the gorge just to the north and there are several benches for stopping and enjoying the view. Guided tours are available on certain days and times for both the castle and Rupe Magna (a gigantic rock full of prehistoric rock carvings). They are also the halfway point of the Sentiero dei Castelli.
