Frederick II of Hohenstaufen built it in 1240 to provide the best possible protection for the entrance to the harbor of Syracuse. The Castello Maniace was both a fortress and a royal palace. After an explosion in 1704, the interior of the castle was largely destroyed. The exterior was initially preserved, but the upper floors were later demolished.

Castello Maniace – the present fortress was built by Frederick II from 1232 to 1240. In 1704, a gunpowder chamber exploded, destroying large parts of the interior of Castello Maniace. The exterior, however, remains virtually unchanged. It has been open to visitors since 2004 following renovations. Worth seeing: the portal from the Hohenstaufen period, the Gothic columned hall of Castello Maniace with its cross-ribbed vault, and the Hohenstaufen stele next to the entrance.

It is impossible to summarize the beauty of Syracuse and its island of Ortigia in a few lines. It is a small piece of land measuring just one square kilometer that emerges on the Ionian Sea, a small Sicilian pearl that deserves to be explored. Absolutely not to be missed: the cathedral of Syracuse, the Maniace castle, the Aretusa spring, but also a walk through the streets of the center of the island, fascinating alleys in which to get lost and fall in love.

Augusta, in Sicily, is a coastal city with an important commercial port. Founded by the ancient Greeks, it retains vestiges of several civilizations, including an Aragonese castle and a lighthouse. Its strategic position has made it a crucial point for sea routes in the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean.

The extreme point of the island (entrance 3.50 euros in 2020). For eight centuries this stone fortress perched on the enchanting island of Ortigia has protected the city of Syracuse. Born as an imperial residence, part of the network of Frederick's castles in southern Italy, from the 16th century it also developed its second nature as a military outpost extending into the Mediterranean. The castle takes its name from the Byzantine commander Giorgio Maniace. The internal part with the cross vaults is very beautiful.
