It is actually a Fortified Watchtower, used for various purposes over time. In the eighteenth century, the construction of two magnificent balconies changed the original use of the tower-farm, transforming it into a stately country residence. On the sides, two square-based dovecotes repeat the profile of the building on a reduced scale, producing an amazing effect. Now, the farm, run by the Leo family, embraces an area embellished by 65 hectares of olive trees, between the two seas, the medieval Abbey of Cerrate, the Rauccio natural park and the baroque beauties of Lecce. The noble façade has a fifteenth-century entrance (normally open and accessible and allows you to visit the internal courtyard), while the battlements and bastion are from the sixteenth century. The north side of the factory was added in the 17th century. The imposing fortification is a testimony of the sixteenth-century defensive interventions implemented by the Emperor Charles V to stem the Turkish invasions. The adaptation of the walls was entrusted to the architect Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya, and in 1542 received a new push by the governator Don Ferrante Loffredo. The walls were therefore replaced by a fortification equipped with bulwarks capable of resisting at the attack of the new war weapons of the time. The defensive front was about 60 meters long and consisted of two floors: the upper one beyond the level of the moat, and the lower one, partially excavated in the rocky bank which today corresponds to the internal planking level.
