The Estense Castle, also called Castello di San Michele, is the most representative monument of the city of Ferrara. It is located in the center of the Renaissance city and with its four towers it allows a panoramic view of the entire territory. The fortress, which is a cultural asset, has over time become the seat of government and administration. Since the twentieth century it has also become a temporary and permanent museum. (wikipedia)

Located in the historic center of Ferrara, it is one of the many wonders that our country is able to offer. Externally very beautiful, it can offer elegance and magnificence. Internally a bit sparse, dark and cold thanks also to the presence of the numerous cells reserved for prisoners and not suitable for those who suffer from narrow and closed spaces. In about a couple of hours it is possible to admire the castle and climb to the top of the tower from which you can see the whole city of Ferrara.

Metal works of art are shown in the inner courtyard - very worth seeing, I think! And really big carp can be admired in the moat.

It was built by Niccolò III, under the direction of Giovanni da Siena, between 1424 and 1434, in the same period the "Delizia" of Belriguardo was built. According to tradition, the palace was the meeting place of Ugo, son of the Marquis Niccolò III, and Parisina, the young wife of the Marquis, whose love ended tragically. The palace was transformed into a "Delizia" by Borso d’Este shortly before his death (1471). It has the appearance of a crenellated castle in the Guelph style with ravelins and forepart; it has 44 large rooms with some beautiful coffered ceilings, a chapel and an internal garden. Later it belonged to the Mosti family, when Alfonso I d’Este granted them the ducal weapon and the surname "Estense". In the eighteenth century it passed by inheritance to Ercole Trotti Mosti Estense, whose descendant Tancredi - patriot and commander of the Bersaglieri del Po - in 1872 promoted its restoration. The first appearance of a tennis court in the province was right here, in 1900, when Tancredi Trotti Mosti himself had one built there. The palace later passed to the Marquis Giovanni Costabili, then to other families who took care of the restorations; currently it is the seat of the Country Club.

Beautiful city in the Po Valley, with an almost completely preserved Renaissance old town. According to Wikipedia, the most bicycle-friendly city in Italy. :)

The Estense Castle was built in 1385 as an instrument of political and military control. The first stone was laid symbolically on September 29th, St. Michael's Day, protector of city gates and fortresses. The work was commissioned to the architect Bartolino da Novara, already the architect of the castle of Pavia and then to that of Mantua, by the Marquis Niccolò II d'Este who considered it essential to equip himself with a powerful repressive machine after an impressive popular revolt unleashed in May of that same year. The Marquis was initially granted a loan of 25,000 ducats by the lord of Mantua Francesco I Gonzaga. [1] At the news of yet another tax increase, the inhabitants of Ferrara rose up and demanded the delivery of Tommaso da Tortona, councilor of the Marquis and responsible for collecting taxes. Tommaso, after having duly received the Sacraments, was handed over by the marquis to the enraged crowd, who literally broke it. Those: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castello_Estense

The Castello Estense is a castle of the family d'Este in Ferrara. In the 14th and 15th centuries, when Ferrara flourished under the Este, the Castello served as a residence for the Dukes. Here was also the rich art collection of the family. After the Este had moved their headquarters to Modena at the end of the 16th century, the Castello lost in importance. After the unification of Italy, it was bought by the province. Today it is the seat of the provincial administration. During the severe earthquake in Emilia Romagna in May 2012, the building, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ferrara, suffered heavy destruction.
