Beautiful castle with a phenomenal view.

The sheer size of the fortress alone shows that Castelsardo, located some 70 kilometers southwest of Alghero, must have once been very important. In the 12th century, the Doria family – a large noble family from Genoa – had a soft spot for the small settlement overlooking the strait between Sardinia and Corsica. Commissioned by the Maritime Republic of Genoa, they fortified the village, built on a protruding headland, in 1101 and 1102. It was during this period that the name Castel Genovese became established. Due to its strategically important location in the Gulf of Asinara, Castelsardo was always a target of conquerors. It was only in 1448 that the Spanish conquered the town and promptly renamed it Castello Aragonese. The name Castelsardo was chosen by Charles Emmanuel III, Duke of Savoy and King of Sardinia. With the Treaty of London, the city passed to the House of Savoy in 1720.

Two years ago I took my MTB on vacation and went from Valledoria to Castelsardo coast coast…. A challenging route, even though I was not an expert I did it, but slowly and with the beauty of the landscape it repays the effort! On the way back I went through the state road… easier but still a state road!

Parking is a good starting point as there is video surveillance and the police station is about 300 m away....

Castelsardo is a fascinating medieval village. Visiting the historic center under the fortress is certainly worth it, even if the climb up the stairs can be a bit tiring. The town, traditionally fishermen, is known for the art of basket weaving. From here you can enjoy a beautiful view of the hamlet at the top of the hill in the distance.

We were in Castelsado for 10 days and there is a reasonable range of restaurants, cafes and supermarkets. You can stroll through old streets, visit the castle and there are numerous beaches nearby

In order to visit the interesting part of the city, you have to face some stairs. Definitely worth it.
