The Palazzo Mediceo is a historic structure built in the Lombard era before the year 1000 in Ottaviano, a municipality in the province of Naples, and later belonged to a branch of the Florentine Medici family. The first nucleus of the village that arose in the current municipality of Roccapiemonte was originally born in the immediate vicinity of the walls of the "Rocca di San Quirico" whose ruins are still present today. The fortress was built by the will of the Lombard prince Guaimario IV of Salerno in the year 1042 on Mount Solano with the primary purpose of defending the surrounding valleys from the Saracens who in that period continuously plundered southern Italy. Of the fortress of San Quirico currently only a few ruins remain, among which we can clearly see both the triple walls and the two gates together with the cylindrical lookout tower. The current situation of the old fortress was determined not only by continuous earthquakes including those of December of the years 1631 and 1857, but also by some allied bombings that occurred during the Second World War.
