Born as a military and defensive building, but also used by the Sforza as a residential site, over time the fortress has had various functions, including housing for papal troops and a prison for political prisoners. The penitentiary use continued even after the annexation of the city to the Kingdom of Italy. Since 1989, after the prison was moved to the new headquarters in Villa Fastiggi, the building is waiting for a new destination.
