Pietraperzia, in Sicily, is a municipality known for its rich history and significant monuments. Once inhabited by the Sicani and then by the Siculi, it offers evidence of the Norman era such as the Norman Castle, built by the Barresi family. Other places of interest include the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which houses sarcophagi made by Antonello Gagini, and the former Dominican convent, now used as municipal offices.

The church of S. Francesco da Paola is a very ancient church of the fourteenth century with a Greek cross plan erected on the base of a previous Byzantine cult building. There is a small underground crypt with rooms used for mummification and display of the deceased. 'U Cannuni is the castle of Mazzarino (real name not known); Military fortress of Norman origin, built around the 9th-10th century, retains a single surviving cylindrical tower and some walls. The large windows that illuminated the rooms, the fireplaces dug into the thick masonry and some rooms of the tower are still visible. It was first a military fortress, to be later transformed into the residence of the lords of the city. It was gradually abandoned as early as 1500, due to landslides that affected the area, and for the construction of the new palace of the princes of Butera, in the center of the current town.

This castle has uncertain origins, but it was certainly built before the 13th century. Of the 4 towers that were originally arranged on 4 sides, today only one remains.
