"The chapel erected on the peak which was always called Monte San Francesco, at 1203 m, recalls the hermit's place where Saint Francis lived, under a cloth stretched and tied to four hornbeams, before the foundation of the convent of Greccio. "The structure was completely renovated in 2015 and still needs some works to be fully usable. The "return to use" project plans to equip the building with what is necessary to make the reception of 8- 10 people. A large fireplace, located in the kitchen-dining room, and a "burn-all" type stove will allow you to stay there even in the cold season.".

This chapel is a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy the view. It consists of two rooms, a small church and a refuge area, managed by the local mountain community. Both are always open and offer excellent shelter on rainy autumn and winter days.

At this crossroads of paths there is a spring with water and picnic tables for taking a break. A little further down there is the Fonte Cognolo refuge, managed by the A.L.A. di Roccantina, is open all year round by reservation.

The Chapel of S. Francesco was one of the places where the Poverello of Assisi took refuge to meditate. In this small space of tranquility he could remain immersed in nature.

An accommodation that I can really recommend. The two owners, Pino and Anna, take excellent care of their guests. The food was delicious and the rooms were very stylishly furnished.

At this point, the dirt road would continue, but it is advisable to continue pushing the bike uphill following the indications of the CAI towards Monte Pizzuto, and then continue on the path that leads back to Poggio Perugino-Rieti.
