Pleasant to relax and rest

The Langendreer district of Bochum has a small natural oasis that people like to use as a local recreation area. Nature lovers particularly appreciate Lake Ümminger because of the many water birds that live there all year round. The water is fed by the Harpener Bach. The lake is around eleven hectares in size. Its outflow flows into the Ölbach, which further south initially supplies the Ölbach ponds with water and then flows into the Kemnader See, Bochum's large Ruhr reservoir. It's not just the lake that offers animals a home. To the southwest of the water there is a biotope made up of oxbow lakes. Numerous water-loving plants grow in the flood zone, among which shy water birds feel at home. Dragonflies and amphibians can be observed during the summer months. In winter, small songbirds such as siskins (Spinus spinus) find food in this area because many seed-bearing native trees and shrubs thrive there.

The Ümminger See is worth visiting at any time of the year......except perhaps on the weekends in summer when the large playground is used as a huge barbecue area.

Feeding ducks and geese according to §55 of the Administrative Offenses Act and punished with a fine of 30 euros. This is not to annoy you. It serves to protect the animals, the cleanliness of bodies of water and bank areas and to avoid rats from leftover food lying around.

The lake is fed by the Harpener Bach, which flows through the lake from north to south and drains it into the Ruhr via the Oelbach. In the Middle Ages, two mill ponds were created as precursors to the lake at the mill of the Schulte-Suntum farm. With the construction of the Dorothea-Erbstollen at the Vollmond colliery, contamination with mine water began in the 18th century. In order to clarify the mine water, settling ponds were created. One of these settling ponds was created southwest of the Schulte-Suntum farm. While the main part of the water flowed directly into the settling pond, there was a ditch on the eastern side as a bypass that met the stream again below the pond outlet. When the Robert Müser colliery closed in 1968, the tailings pond became unnecessary. The Ümminger See in Bochum-Langendreer is a popular local recreation area for young and old, with a great playground and a roller skating rink.
