The castle of Serravalle is a complex of ruins at the mouth of the Blenio valley. On this rock spur, the first fortifications were built in 900, but they were destroyed and rebuilt over time.

Hidden away in the green, an architectural gem slumbers here, which is one of the historic Swiss houses. The Castello is privately owned.

This mandatory extra loop will take you to the stunning Blenio-Valley - also called "Valle del Sole". We will send you sightseeing at the remains of Castello di Serravalle. A short but very impressive section to slow down and push / carry your bike through the ruins of the ancient castle. The parcours is mandatory but can be ridden in direction of your choice!

Situated on an enchanting hill in an elevated position, it probably belonged, as its name testifies, to a castle destroyed in 1518 by the Uranians. It is an enchanting building with two parallel naves, built at two different times. The primitive chapel, perhaps aristocratic, with a round apse and a single two-storey nave (the lower probably a crypt) survived the demolition of the castle. The plan of the current church does not correspond to the primitive one, but is the result of an addition to the north of another nave, completed with a square chancel from the early fifteenth century.

On an enchanting hill, in the middle of the ruins of a medieval castle complex in an elevated position, the church of Santa Maria del Castello, as its name indicates, probably belonged to a castle that was destroyed by the Uranians in 1518. Today access is via the northwest side of the hill. The old access presumably led via a complicated system of kennels and gates from the east side. It is a charming building with two parallel naves that was built at two different times. The primitive, perhaps aristocratic chapel with a round apse and a single two-story nave (the lower one probably a crypt) survived the demolition of the castle. The floor plan of today's church does not correspond to the primitive one, but is the result of an addition to the north of another nave, which was supplemented with a square choir from the early fifteenth century. The two choirs are separated by wrought iron bars from the 17th century.

🚵♂️ SwitzerlandMobility's MTB route 65 "S2" leads through the middle of the ruins of the "Castello di Seravalle". The ruin can be visited freely. We saved very impressive pictures. Reserve some time for a break. 😲 ⚔ After the church there is a step about 50 cm high. With the tanked strength of the knights, however, this is not a problem. 🐴

Extensive ruins of a large castle complex, which extend around 400 meters north of Semione over a rock ridge. The first weir system was built here around 900 and was changed several times in the High Middle Ages. In 1176 Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa besieged the castle and handed it over to a follower, but soon after the Battle of Legnano it was attacked by his Milanese opponents and razed to the ground. The complex that is visible today was built from 1220 and was the residence and place of jurisdiction of Milanese bailiffs. In 1402 Serravalle was conquered again by unknown troops and destroyed with the exception of the castle church.
