Villa Olmo is a perfect example of Italian neoclassical style. Its elegance and charm didn’t go unnoticed by Napoleon Bonaparte and Giuseppe Garibaldi, who were two of the most notable guests of the villa. The villa began restoration work in early 2024, so its interior will not be open to visitors for about a couple of years. The gardens that surround it are open all throughout the year. Castello Baradello, the symbol of Spina Verde Park, is a fortification erected in 1558 by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, on the remains of 6th-century Byzantine buildings. Visits to the tower of Castello Baradello are possible by reservation only.

Ruins of a small cave castle, clearly visible and with exposed access in the rock walls north of Mendrisio. A straight, three-story wall closes the natural cave. The main openings and probably the namesake are a high entrance and two windows. There is a cast iron window above the climb. Several embrasures and light hatches have been preserved. According to architectural criteria, the castle dates back to the 15th century. It probably served as a defensive refuge for a local leadership group. The Tanùn (Tanone), another cave on the ascent, which is closed off with a low wall, was probably related to Tri Böcc. An at least indirect connection is conceivable with the grotto hermitage of San Nicolao, which, according to tradition, was built by Loterio Rusca in 1413 in a higher rock echelon.

The Baradello Castle, symbol of the Spina Verde Park, is a fortification built by the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa on the remains of older buildings. The Castle was built in a strategic place and, thanks to its elevated position over the city, it allowed the control of the whole surrounding area. It was dismantled after 1526 by the Spanish invaders. Inside the Tower it is possible to visit a museum itinerary that exhibits to the public archaeological finds coming from the excavations conducted at the Baradello by the architect Luigi Mario Belloni in the seventies and materials recovered during the excavation campaigns conducted in the years 2008-2010 under the direction of the Civic Museums of Como, with the concession of the Ministry. In fact, the new exhibition was created in close collaboration between the Archaeological Museum, the Spina Verde Park and the Superintendency.

The old town center of Como is still partly surrounded by the old town wall from the Middle Ages. There is a defense tower on the corner.

Castle ruins of Castello Baradello. Once a large castle complex, there is now a tower and a few remains of the wall. There are some display boards with explanations, unfortunately only in Italian, no English translation. Apparently the castle should be open Saturday and Sunday, there are guided tours, but possibly only in summer. Unfortunately it was closed with us.

The park behind the villa, accessible through two side arcades, is the most important public park in the city of Como: it extends for about five hectares without the surfaces of the various buildings and is one of the most important historical parks not only in Como but the entire province. There are around 780 trees in the park, including some monumental plants such as the horse chestnut, Lebanon cedar, liquidambar and some plane trees, as well as 460 shrubs and bushes.

In 1924 the villa was bought by the Como municipality. To mark the centenary of Alessandro Volta's death in 1927, an international exhibition was set up in the villa. It has been the seat of the “Centro Volta” since 1982 and is also used for numerous exhibitions, congresses and events.

Como - Villa dell'Olmo (Villa Olmo) The name of the villa goes back to a huge elm (Olmo), which, according to legend, Plinio the Younger planted and formerly decorated the park of the villa. The original plans for the villa in neo-classical style (today the central building) come from Simone Cantoni of Muggio in the canton of Ticino, designed in the late 18th century. The first owner is Innocenzo Odescalchi, the following owners extend the building by adding wings, but without distorting the stylistic face of the villa. Among the famous guests are Napoleon and Garibaldi. Today, the villa is owned by Como Municipality, which has been using it for cultural events since its restoration. The main façade faces Lake Como and consists of the central building (ie the original villa) - which is completed by columns and optical façade structures, pilaster strips, a rhythmic section and a roof terrace with statues facing upwards - as well as the two lateral ones wings. The clearly structured exterior transforms into a sumptuous interior: here there are plenty of stucco, golden ornaments and frescoes by artists of the late 17th and early 18th century. Among all the rooms stands the Teatrino, a small theater with 92 seats (1853), particularly distinguished by its decorative charm and the frescoes of Fontana. In the park is a small neoclassical temple and flows a small stream. In the middle of the garden - opposite the villa - is a fountain that shows two children playing with a sea monster; a work of the sculptor G. Odofrechi. The mansard is dedicated to an exhibition by the architect Antonio Sant'Elia (1886-1916), the first advocate of futuristic architecture. http://www.dercomersee.com/villaolmo.htm
