The old town of La Neuveville, located on Lake Biel, offers many interesting things to explore; ideally on foot, as the town center is closed to vehicles! If you want to explore further afield, you can climb up to the castle. Once you're up there, the pavilion offers a magnificent view of the city, Lake Biel, St. Peter's Island, and, if visibility is good, the Bernese Alps are worth the effort. If you still haven't had enough, hike the Pilouvi Gorge and return to the city...but it takes some time (!) and is NOT a walk in the park. You should also be sure-footed, wear suitable footwear, and be fearless of heights... Murten Castle dates back to the time of Count Peter II of Savoy (1255). Under the portal from 1516, which was rebuilt several times and in its current form dates from 1755, there was a cistern that is now only marked in the paving. The large, square tower, the so-called keep or "Luegisland", was used by Adrian von Bubenberg to monitor the events during the battle. While the castle was previously the residence of the mayors or was used as a hospital, barracks and prison, it is now the seat of the senior office of the Fribourg lake district. Murten Castle dates back to the 13th century and is now used by the canton of Fribourg. The castle tower is open to the public and can be visited daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Very beautiful old French town with many cafes to linger. Furthermore, on the edge of the old town you have a fantastic view of Lake Murten.
