Possibly this is a camp which is broken down before September but it was empty when we went past and could easily be used to sleep in and the BBQ pit used, once cleaned out.

Son Kul Lake is surrounded by the snow-capped mountains and vast steppes, which are also used as a summer pasture by the herdsmen. There is a lot of edelweiss in the meadows. There are numerous yurt camps; prior registration is advisable. In the evening it gets noticeably cool, but then the tents are heated up briefly. Hygiene is not always taken into account.

Hot springs to relax after a strenuous hike

We stayed here at the Eco-Yurt Camp before riding the horse to Lake Ala-Kul the next day.

If you take your bathing suit with you, you can take a hot bath here in a small hut. In between and afterwards you can hop into the glacier river behind the house to cool off. We recommend!

The yurt camp is dismantled every autumn and rebuilt in spring. From here you can go hiking on the lake or to the mountains. You can also rent horses to ride.

In Altyn Arashan you will find four guest houses where you can camp. If you prefer to set up your own camp, you will find plenty of nice campsites. Altyn Arashan is known for his hot springs. Each guesthouse has its own hot springs. You prefer something wilder? Then you will find a bit further along the riverbank along public hot springs. Just follow the trail along the water at Ala-Kul Guesthouse.

This relaxed & exceptionally welcoming nomadic sheep herder’s tent was the last place I slept during the race. With no language between us, we still managed to trade stories, compare tattoos and become friends in once evening. Thank you, Ramir.
