The public park features old trees and small ponds.

The area was originally used by Roskilde Kloster as pasture land. The monastery had over 1,000 hectares of land and was one of the largest landowners in Roskilde. In 1819 the monastery created a park on part of its land. The park contained several artificial lakes that had been created as fishponds as early as the 18th century. The park was created for the nuns of the convent, but was also open to other citizens of the city. In 1904 Roskilde Kloster decided to double the area of the park. The expansion was completed in 1906 and some of the former fish ponds were re-established here after they had dried up. Between 1908 and 1923 the city bought about 50 hectares of land from the monastery. In 1934 the city council decided to build Folkeparken on part of this area.

Inspired by the scenic (fantastic) spot of Frogmore (or Froschmoorstetten) in J.R.R. Tolkiens „The Hobbit" novel, this place reminded me very much on how I imagined this place when I heard about it the first time. Overwhelmed by frogs and toads in the marshes and bogs, an occassional grey winged heron, and swarms of little midgets filling this place with vivid life. It just misses the „Floating Log Inn" :)

This is a really peaceful spot. You can rest on a bench and enjoy the view of the pond.

The forest, which is about 3km from Roskilde, is under nature protection and borders directly on the Roskilde Fjord.

Easy hike on well prepared path, accessible to most people.

Gerhøj is a small place on the Roskilde Fjord with about 700 inhabitants. The Kro was closed for years and was taken over by local people in 1997 and brought back to life. The gastronomy offers a kitchen with Danish and French influence. The small beach hotel has 10 rooms. King Chr. X visited the Kro once. Where he sat with his family is the "King's Corner" today, of course with portraits of the queen and king. The harbor is a cozy place where recreational fishermen still catch eels and fish in the fjord. You can also swim there and there are also some pitches for mobile campers.
