Originally, the Indrefjord (the inner fjord) was part of the Nakskov fjord, but with the building of the lock at Nybro and the dykes in the 1870s, this part was, so to speak, 'cut off' from the fjord. Today the recreation area of the town of Nakskov extends here. There are many cycling and walking routes around the bird-rich inner fjord and the small lakes, which are also known to be good fishing spots. At the southern tip is a large bird sanctuary.
