A wide, tranquil waterfall, more of a flowing stream than a sheer drop. Its waters glide between lava rocks, creating a relaxing and rarely visited landscape. Right next to it is the small Fossálar refuge, a historic spot that once sheltered travelers in the midst of these inhospitable lands. Today, it's a perfect place to stop, breathe in the calm, and enjoy a corner where nature and history meet.

It is one of the few paths we have found so far that is similar to those found in the Alpine region or low mountain ranges.

In June 2024, the Systrafoss will be virtually dry. But the walk is a winner.

Vegetation prevents a good view of the waterfall.

The waterfall is about 60-80 meters high and has a striking shape. The rock formations, how the water falls and the surroundings make Systrafoss one of the most photogenic waterfalls in Iceland. The name Systrafoss means 'sister waterfalls' and is named after a monastery that was located in Kirkjubæjarklaustur in the Middle Ages. 'Systra' refers to the nuns in the monastery.

A beautiful Hike through the Eldgjá volcanic Canyon!

One of the finest waterfalls in Iceland. Must stop if you are travelling on road F208. If you can, go in the evening or early in the morning, there will likely be no one else around. Note: Getting to the Parking area requires one medium river crossing, one of the wides on road f208. However, you could also park the car by the first river crossing, next to the Warden's cabin. Reaching that point is doable with any car allowed for f-roads without crossing rivers. That adds a couple of KMs each way, but the hike is easy enough and you will not risk killing your rental car.
