This is the main summit, which is not visible from the Mueller Hut. Only the sub-summit is visible from the Mueller Hut. The ascent to the main summit leads via the sub-summit and requires a short uphill section. A rock tower must be bypassed on the right. The path is partially marked with cairns.

The track is quite exposed in many places. But if you are fit, go in fine weather and are used to hiking this kind of elevation difference, you should be absolutely fine. The views are just breathtaking!

the turn upwards to Mt Aiken comes as the devil's punchbowl track starts to head downwards. the track is on your right and turns steeply up hill.

One of my favorite places in New Zealand. Great view from above of the surrounding mountains and a really nice, short hike through the grassy plain.

Get out of the city for once! Take public bus number 8 to the Gondola valley station and take the gondola up to Mt Cavendish. At the summit we enjoyed the wonderful view over Christchurch. To the west the long beaches of Brighton, on the other side the crater rim towards Lyttleton. Several hiking trails possible. We hiked to Mt Pleasant, stopping again and again for photo stops. You can get tickets for the gondola on site or at the i site in Cathedral Square. We had decided on 2 attractions, a combination ticket gondola and tram hop on - hop off, there was a $5 discount per person.
