You can swim here. But you should definitely pay attention to the signs. Strong current and the water is very cold. Mosquito spray is recommended

The first part to the Swing Bridge can be easily walked even in bad weather. The paths are paved and the route has a beautiful natural roof almost throughout

"Oparara" is a unique combination of natural landforms, diverse ecosystems and spectacular caves and rock arches formed over millions of years. They characterize this area. Public access to the is limited to DOC (Department of Conservation) approved tours due to the sensitive ecological nature of the area.

A very nice place, unfortunately with sand tiles! So don't forget the repellent! There is a circular hiking trail about 2 km long, which was unfortunately closed at the end of February 2020.

Clear water directly from the mountains. Officially swimming is not appreciated here anymore as some accidents happened in the past and the water can be quite fast along the gorge. If you walk a bit downriver from the parking lot you will find some nice pots with slower current and less depth to get into the water.

The Gorge can be quite crowded - best to come here outside the main tourist times. The scenery is great and although there is just one path going back and fort it is surely worth a visit. Climbing a bit across the rocks away from the stairs will get you into quieter spots as well easily. Make sure to spend some time and relax in this great part of nature.
