To the west of Bettwiesen Castle once stood the proud castle of the former barons of Bettwiesen. In 1471 the fortifications were transferred to Fischingen Abbey, but gradually fell into disrepair and in 1643 only supplied the building blocks for the construction of the Bettwiesen church. In 1627 the Fischingen abbot Placidus Brunschweiler built a "cheerful" little castle opposite the old castle, at the height of the Bettwieser vineyard slope. In addition to the "very pleasant and beautiful prospectus (view)", there was also the healthy air that was "very useful in times of plague", which prompted him to build this lovely summer residence here. And really, when the plague threatened, the papal nuncio and his entourage withdrew to the Bettwiesenberg until the epidemic had died down.
