The hemp lake is silting up more and more and today no longer has any free water surfaces. So the bog is gradually disappearing.

The Sonder forest area has been a nature reserve since 1961 and, together with the neighboring forest areas on Oberholz and Großer Horn, is part of the European NATURA 2000 system of protected areas. The core of the area is the hemp lake, which was created by leaching rock salts in the geological subsoil. It is the largest of what were previously six sinkholes of this type. These sinkholes filled with water over a long period of time, creating lakes with no natural inflow and outflow, so they were fed solely by rainwater. The bank at the pond was built in connection with the BUGA 2007 and has a special meaning - see photo of the attached plate.

The area is partly in a renovated, but also in a disintegrated state. It exudes its own charm. The walk through the small park and the peace and quiet at the 2 ponds is pleasant and invites you to rest.

There is a small witch's house right next door 🏚️

The pond is leased by VDSF Herbsleben. Great reed bank Ufer. A bit away from the water you can take a break at a covered table protected from the rain.

The Hanfsee is located in the Große Sonder forest area. Unfortunately, the paths are very overgrown.

The nature reserve "Herbslebener Teiche" lies about 3 kilometers outside the municipality Herbsleben in an easterly direction and today covers an area of 99.3 hectares. Since 1993 this area has been declared a "European bird sanctuary" because native birds, insects and amphibians, some of which are threatened with extinction, have resettled there. The water areas are managed by the sport fishing association and used for fishing.
