A very beautiful, small castle garden with many flowers and a small fountain.

The first castle complex was built around 900 on the site of a former Slavic settlement. It probably served as an outpost of the royal palace of Dornburg. Renovations and extensions took place in the following centuries. The outer walls visible today, with their four towers, date from the 16th century.

Yes, that's how the old knights were! ... and don't forget to go to the church a little further up afterwards and look at the knights... in stone!

A castle has been documented on this site since the 12th century. Due to its location on the border of the Margraviate of Meissen, it was strategically important and well protected by a wall and moat. The castle was redesigned several times in the following centuries. In 1589, the "New Kitchen" was built. Of the medieval castle and Renaissance palace, only the west wing (House I) remains today. During the period when Eisenberg was the residence of the Duchy of Saxe-Eisenberg (1680-1707), Duke Christian had the building complex altered. The palace was redesigned into a Baroque three-wing complex, and between 1679 and 1692, the transverse church was added to the east wall of the palace. The palace complex also includes the two-part palace park with an arched garden, the laboratory, the kitchen garden with a pavilion, and the bust of Duke Christian.

The castle church "St. Trinitatis" Duke Christian had this baroque transverse church built between 1679 and 1692 by the master builders Gundermann and Richter. Italian plasterers and the Saxon court painter Harms designed the interior of the church. The Donat Trost organ is one of the most important instruments in central Germany. Due to its interior design, the church is considered the most beautiful baroque church in Thuringia.

There was a castle in the town, which was built in 1482 by Burkhard Schenk von Tautenburg. The last of the Tautenburg family, Christian Schenk von Tautenburg, died in this castle on August 3, 1640. He had previously watched as his 22-year-old wife, Countess Reuss, and his children died on November 25, 1631, and his castle in Frauenprießnitz went up in flames on May 12, 1638. The local castle was demolished in 1780 and its stones and building parts were used to rebuild the Frauenprießnitz castle. (Wikipedia)

The first documented mention of the Tautenburg dates back to 1223. It came into the possession of the Schenken von Vargula before 1232. A branch of the Schenken, who named themselves after the Tautenburg, settled here until 1640. It is not known when the first village settlement developed below the castle, but it probably happened soon after the castle was built. The castle and the adjacent forest were initially given as a fief to the Lords of Lobdeburg-Saalburg as sub-vassals of the empire. When Hartmann IV of Lobdeburg-Saalburg died without a male heir, Emperor Frederick II transferred the imperial fief to the Tautenburg Schenken in 1243. (Wikipedia)

It is often assumed that the complex was built as a castle for a family of imperial ministers around the middle of the 12th century. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1223. In 1227 the knight Tuto von Tautenburg was mentioned again in connection with a donation. At this time, the Tautenburg was in the hands of the Lords of Lobdeburg-Saalburg. (Wikipedia)

The complex is divided into two parts, of which some ditches and terraces are still visible. In the southeast corner of the western, older part, a pentagonal gate tower with battlements and a gateway has been preserved, which is often mistakenly referred to as a keep. Its chronology is unclear; it is usually dated to the first half of the 13th century, but this is obviously based on the first mention. A section of wall with opus spicatum and no lime mortar could indicate an earlier construction, but this type of walling technique is also possible after 1200 and up to the middle of the 13th century. Another dating support is a small quatrefoil window, which also dates to around the second third of the 13th century. The gate tower could therefore also be connected to new construction, conversions or extensions by the steward Rudolf II of Vargula after he acquired the castle in the 1230s and 40s. This also applies to the strong remains of the walls of a north-east wing, which supposedly housed the chapel mentioned in a building inscription from 1232. To the west, a three-storey residential building was attached to the tower, which is said to have had bay turrets on the north side. Source: Wikipedia

After the death of his father Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in 1675, Duke Christian of Saxe-Eisenberg received part of the former Principality of Altenburg with the offices of Eisenberg, Camburg, Ronneburg and Roda as the Duchy of Saxe-Eisenberg. He chose the town of Eisenberg as his residence. Here he built the Christiansburg Castle, on the east side of which he built the baroque castle church from 1680 to 1692. The Eisenberg Castle Church is a transverse church with a choir facing east, in which the pulpit altar and the two-story organ are located. The construction was led by Wilhelm Gundermann from Altenburg and Johann Moritz Richter from Weißenfels. The court painter Harms painted the church since 1684. The vaulted choir ceiling is filled with the fresco “Adoration of the 24 Elders, before the Throne of God”. The arched arch is decorated with plastic stucco work. The altarpiece depicts “Mary Annunciation” and has a wreath of flowers and fruits in stucco work
