First mentioned in the early 14th century, the Teufelslöcher (Devil's Holes) are among the oldest documented caves in Germany. These are karst caves that have since been sealed. Several benches are located at the Teufelslöcher, and Jena's local history trail begins here, leading from here across the central Kernberg horizontal. The Teufelslöcher are no longer accessible caves at the foot of the Kernberge - a natural monument that is used today to protect species, e.g. served by bats. There is also a spring here and for runners a decent ascent to the Kernberge begins from here (or a violent descent ends)
