A shoe factory stood here in the 20th century. It was founded by Adolph Zimmer. In 1923 he expanded the factory premises with a building along Aumaer Straße. Chemicals were stored in this basement. After shoe production ended in 1990, the factory building stood empty. It was demolished in 2009 as part of the inner-city renovation. This grotto was found under Aumaer Straße.

In the middle section it forms a narrow V-shaped valley in which the Zaufensgraben nature reserve is located, which is the smallest in Gera with an area of 11 hectares.
