10월 21, 2025, Nara Park Deer

As "nice" as the encounter with the Nara deer may seem at first glance, they are still animals and therefore loyal to their behavior, either instinctively or according to their life stage and gender. Conditional caution, rutting, food jealousy, and territorial demarcation could thus lead to "unpredictable" behavior...

Nara Park is home to approximately 1,200 trusting sika deer, considered messengers of a deity and protected as living national treasures. The deer are so greedy for the biscuits (200 yen) that they even spurn grass. The male deer no longer have antlers... which is a good thing, because otherwise several tourists would be injured.

On the way to the actual temple, one encounters many visitors and deer, which can become quite pushy depending on their feeding behavior. These seemingly cuddly "Bambis" are (and not just according to "Brehm's Animal Life"), if encountered in a natural environment, so-called wild animals, whose otherwise natural behavior in the presence of non-species conspecifics (such as us humans) would be "flight." Even a Mr. Pavlov had already described reactions to stimuli in the last century, which can be studied here and in a modified form, e.g., through intrusive begging for crunchy food. Therefore, I did not offer myself as a guinea pig to these little animals or as a cash cow to the feed sellers...

The city of Nara is located in the south of the Japanese main island of Honshu and is home to around 400,000 human residents as well as around 1,200 deer and roe deer. Nara's deer and roe deer not only attract the interest of many tourists, but also have a very special significance for locals. The animals have been part of the cityscape for centuries and are revered as sacred by the residents of Nara.

The Great South Gate is the main entrance to the Tôdai-ji grounds. The original, which dates back to the Nara period, was destroyed by a typhoon during the Heian period. The current gate was rebuilt towards the end of the 12th century in the so-called "Daibutsu style". This type of construction goes back to models from Sung period China and was brought to Japan by the monk Chôgen, who was responsible for the reconstruction of the Tôdai-ji. The topping-out ceremony took place in 1199 and the building was completed in 1203 together with the two protective deities, the Ni-ô, located to the right and left of the entrance. The gate with its double, curved console roof is six columns wide and three columns deep. The eighteen columns supporting the roof measure up to 21 m, and the entire building above the stone foundation is 25.46 m high. The Great South Gate corresponds to the dimensions of the Hall of the Great Buddha and is the largest temple gate in Japan.

The temple is worth a visit for several reasons: - fewer tourists - religious center - great view of Nara - it acts as part of an open-air museum

A sorin is basically the spire ("set of treasures," if you want to get technical) that sits atop a pagoda. About 1200 years ago, there was a 7-story pagoda at Todai-ji. This sorin was made for a replica pagoda and exhibited at the 1970 EXPO. It stands over 10m tall, which makes me wonder how something like this could have ever stood atop a pagoda of that size. Amazing. Todai-ji, the Great Eastern Temple, was commissioned by Emperor Shomu in the early part of the 700's. It is the head temple of the Kegon sect of Buddhism, but used to be the head of all the Buddhist temples in Japan until it was moved from Nara to Nagaoka in order to limit their influence in governmental affairs (the court was located in Nara and then in Kyoto, close to Todai-ji). The original complex contained two 7-story pagodas, the largest ever in Japan. Although those are gone, Todai-ji is a wealth of national treasures.

Feeding the deer was brilliant...suddenly there was a whole bunch of them standing around you and you were gently nudged, sometimes not so gently, with the request for more...you had to move away a little more vehemently

In the western part of Nara, deer run, lie, beg and sleep. In the meadows near the temples and shrines, they are fed and are simply there.

The shrine is breathtaking. Especially if you have previously done the hike on the Kumano Kodō, you will be rewarded again with the shrine. However, on weekends in high season the shrine can be very crowded - depending on the time.
