It is one of the few remaining castles in the region that still offer such a vivid connection to the past. The castle was the ancestral seat of the Beninga family, one of the most influential chieftain families in East Frisia. It is particularly famous as the residence of Enno Beninga, the chronicler of East Frisian history.

🎓✨ Norderburg Castle, the magnificent moated castle in Dornum, is a fascinating example of how historic walls can be filled with modern life. Today, the castle houses a secondary school, offering a learning environment that is second to none.

The baroque moated castle in the historic center of the sleepy little town of Dornum. The Norderburg was built in the 14th century by chief Hicko Kankena. In the 17th century, Haro Joachim von Closter expanded the castle into a four-wing complex with an outer bailey. The lord of the manor has furnished the castle with special portals, gable triangles and coats of arms of related families as well as sculptures and sayings. The beautifully restored knights' hall has a gallery running around it. The ceiling is decorated with figurative and ornamental paintings. Oil paintings on the walls show the von Closter family and their relatives. The castle complex is now used as a secondary school. In the castle, only the knights' hall can be visited as part of a guided tour.
