The lake is surrounded by tall trees and has large lawns. The HIZ (Hunte Information Center) has been located at Hartensbergsee since 2005. This exhibition building provides visitors with an overview of the Hunte River. It provides comprehensive information about the river's history as well as its flora and fauna. The water in the newly connected oxbow lake is currently still quite dirty, but it is becoming clearer as a result of the replacement. The old water that flows out takes the mud with it. Such so-called oxbow lakes were created in the course of the straightening of the Hunte between 1954 and 1959, which was carried out for land reclamation, as SUN managing director Rudolf Stukenborg reported.
